VLSM

VLSM stands for Variable length subnet mask, when try to separate a major subnet into minor ones, then that process is called VLSM. A Variable Length Subnet Mask (VLSM) simply means subnetting a subnet. To simplify this, VLSM is a means of breaking down IP addresses into subnets and allocating it according to the individual need on a network.

Eg:

Network        :       10.10.10.0/24
Subnet          :       255.255.255.0

Using VLSM 10.10.10.0-/24 can be separated into two subnets: 10.10.10.0/30 and 10.10.10.4/28

Network        :       10.10.10.0/30
Subnet          :       255.255.255.252

Network        :        10.10.10.4/28
Subnet         :        255.255.255.240
